More than 1.5% of all cats in the US have suffered or is suffering from a Urinary Tract Infection. Cats can develop a whole list of problems that deal with the bladder and urethra.

Over 70 years ago, the cat's veterinarian was the one who found the signs of Urinary Tract Infections. It still remains one of the most complicated problems in feline medicine.

Here are some signs and symptoms to look for, if you think your cat may have a Urinary Tract Infection:

• There may be blood in your pet's urine.
• Your pet may cry or strain when urinating.
• The urine has a strong, horrible smell.
• Your cat may have more reoccurring accidents in places other than the litter box.

If you see any of the symptoms call your vet and schedule an appointment for your cat.

Most Urinary Tract Infections will clear up very well and quick, after they have been treated with antibiotics prescribed by your veterinarian. If you don't get your cat to the vet in a fair amount of time, the infection can and most likely will ascend into the kidney and cause very serious problems.

It is all right to wait one day to call your veterinarian to see if it will pass. Most likely, it will not clear up on it's own. If your cat is straining to urinate and nothing is coming out, this needs to be brought to your veterinarian's attention immediately. A stone blocking the urethra could cause this. This is very common in male cats and requires emergency medical treatment.
